New Delhi: A 16-year-old student of a government-run school in east Delhi’s Krishna Nagar was seriously injured after he was stabbed at least half a dozen times with a knife allegedly by another boy from his school at the campus playground on Thursday morning.
The Class 11 boy suffered four stab wounds on his back and two on his arms, police said, adding that the incident took place around 8 am, soon after the morning assembly prayers got over.
Police said the alleged attacker, who is 18-years-old according to school records, was caught and handed over to the police by students and teachers of the school. They also admitted the injured boy to Hedgewar Hospital, where doctors said his condition is stable.
Maintaining that a case regarding the matter has been registered at the Krishna Nagar police station, police said the alleged attacker was apprehended and the knife used in the crime has been seized. During questioning, the attacker told police that he found the knife lying on the roadside while coming to school.
Initial probe revealed that the two boys often bullied each other and had altercations over one issue or the other. They were classmates until last year, when the boy who attacked the other boy failed in Class 10, police said.
Deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Meghna Yadav said they are trying to find out the reason behind the fight between the two students that triggered the incident. “We are ascertaining the sequence of the events as well as the source through which the boy arranged the knife. We are also probing how he entered the school premises with a knife,” said Yadav.
“The fight took place after the morning prayer, when students were being dispersed from the ground so that they could go back to classrooms. We conduct surprise checks to see if any student is carrying a mobile phone. But this student was carrying a vegetable knife, which no one noticed. The case is now with the police,” said Dinesh Kumar, vice-principal of the school.
Police said the injured boy lives with his mother and two brothers in east Delhi’s Jagatpuri and his father died some years ago. His 32-year-old brother said he had an altercation with the Class 10 student in the school premises on Wednesday as well after the classes got over.
