Chandigarh, 12 September(Wishav Warta): Acting on the interim report submitted by Justice Mehtab Singh Gill (retd) commission into false cases registered in the last 10 years in the state, the Punjab home department has directed the DGP to initiate action against erring police officials as per the panel’s recommendations. He also asked him to take action against the complainants who lodged false cases.
After coming to power, the Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government had on April 5 constituted the commission of inquiry. After probing 178 cases so far, the panel had submitted its interim report to the chief minister on August 23 and recommended cancellation of 19 FIRs and withdrawal of cases from courts. The commission also stated, “It should be ensured that police officers having a clean track record and of known integrity are posted to key posts, especially in the field.
” Declaring all district magistrates as nodal officers for implementing commission’s report, the government has asked them have to submit the action taken report through the commission. The DGP has been asked to send the report by 25th of every month to the government. Dismissal of DSP Gurmit Singh has been recommended by the commission for a false case registered at police station Sadar Khanna at his behest. The compensation to be paid to victims will be recovered from at least 14 police officials, including DSP Gurmit Singh. Prosecution of three sarpanches has also been recommended apart from the recovery of compensation for the victim from the principal of government senior secondary school (boys), Rajasansi.
The compensation, recommended in as many as 130 false cases, is to be recovered from cops as well as complainants. The commission has also found as many as five false rape cases regis tered at various places in Punjab and has recommended cancellation of those FIRs.
