*Chandigarh, May 9( Wishavwarta )- Taking a strong exception to the Punjab government’s decision to setting up of cash counters by the Electricity Board (PSPCL) for payment of electricity bills in the state, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab has demanded complete remission (waiver) on electricity bills amid the extended lockdown.
In a statement issued from party headquarters on Saturday, state unit president and Member of Parliament (MP) Bhagwant Mann said that the manner in which the government in the saddle was forcing its decisions over the people of the state arbitrarily in this hour of global distress, triggered by the corona-virus epidemic. The government’s arbitrary decision has send out a message loud and clear that the people were being used as mere bait for their petty political ends.
Mann said that while, on the one hand, the Captain government was paying billions of rupees to private thermal plants without even a single unit of electricity being generated by them, on the other hand it was not been able to offer a waiver on two-months power bills for those were holed up in their homes and following the essential lockdown norms for months now. He said that in this hour of acute crisis, if a government did not provide the necessary concessions to the people, why did we need a popular government?
Taking a swipe at the government, Mann alleged, on the one hand the government was going the whole hog to ensure liquor delivery at doorstep in the state to check crowding in front of liquor vends, while on the other it had set up cash counters to ‘facilitate’ people to pay their electricity bills from May 8, throwing the lockdown protocols to the winds?
The AAP MP demanded that the government should immediately reverse its arbitrary and unreasonable decision on the payment of electricity bills as per the last year’s reading and offer a complete waiver on electricity bills for the 2-3 months in view of the lockdown, adding the collection of electricity bills of shops or houses which never opened during the lockdown, was a tantamount open ‘loot’ and a grave injustice.
Mann said that if the government did not reverse its decision, the Aam Aadmi Party along with the affected people of the state would launch yet another power ‘andolan’ against the government and, if necessary, resort to legal recourse to corner it.
