New Delhi: More than 12 years after the RTI Act came into existence, the total number of RTI applications to public authorities – central ministries, departments and government organisations – have shown a dip of 6%.

The slide is intriguing in the backdrop of 2016-17 being the period which saw the highest compliance of reporting of public authorities – from 1,903 in 2015-16 the number of public authorities responding went up to 1,965 in 2016-17.
The figures, which were released by the central information commission (CIC) as part of its annual report, show that while more public authorities are now filing their annual RTI statistics to the CIC, the actual number of RTI applications has come down from 9.76 lakh in 2015-16 to 9.17 lakh in 2016-17.
