Mumbai: At least 33 people were killed when a bus carrying tourists to Mahabaleshwar fell into a 200-ft deep gorge along the Mumbai-Goa highway in Raigad district on Saturday.
Raigard collector Vijay Suryawanshi confirmed the death toll.
Only one person survived in the accident that took place near Poladpur, around 200 km from Mumbai, according to state highway traffic officials.
Police said people from Dr Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth at Dapoli were going on a picnic to Mahabaleshawar.As they were crossing a sharp turn at Poladpur around 11.30 am, the driver lost control and the bus fell into the gorge.
Officials of Poladpur police station have rushed to the spot for rescue operations.
A National Disaster Response Force team from Pune has been called in.
