Tarn Taran: A Punjab police head constable and a constable in Punjab Home Guard (PHG) died after being hit by an SUV, which dragged their bodies for around 100 meters, in Amarkot village, 45kms from Tarn Taran, on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
The Toyota Innova SUV belongs to a Congress worker Saraj Singh’s brother Karaj Singh of Dasuwal village, police said. The unidentified driver of the SUV has been booked by the police.
The deceased was identified as head constable Inderjit Singh of Theh Sarhali village and PHG’s constable Kuldeep Singh of Khemkaran village.
Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sulakhan Singh Mann said,“The deceased were deployed at Amarkot. At around 12:30 am, the duo gave an indication asking the SUV to stop, which was coming from Rajoke. Instead of making a halt, the SUV driver crushed the cops and dragged their bodies for a few metres. The SUV then hit an electricity pole and stopped.”
“The driver fled from the spot immediately,” the DSP added.
The DSP said bodies of both the policemen were sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem.
On the complaint of the deceased Inderjit’s brother Arjun Singh, who was there when the incident took place, a case has been registered against unidentified driver of the SUV.
In April 2015, Saraj was booked in a case related to recovery of around 5kg heroin in Bhura Kohna village. Police had arrested three drug peddlers while their accomplice Saraj was absconding.
Former MLA of Shiromani Akali Dal from Khemkaran constituency Virsa Singh Valtoha said Saraj Singh is a famous smuggler.
He said, “The SUV was coming from Indo-Pak border at night. There is something fishy, which should be investigated”.
