Chandigarh: The Leader of Opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Sukhpal Singh Khaira wrote a letter to the Punjab Cane Commissioner, Jaswant Singh requesting him to direct the owners of Rana Sugar Mill, Buttar Sewian, Dist. Amritsar to release the pending amount of sugarcane growers of the area. In his letter Khaira said that the long pending payments of farmers are causing difficulties and the farmers are unable to make both ends meet in the absence of funds.
Khaira said that the sugarcane growers had met him during meetings and had requested him to proceed their case to get the payments released. He said the farmers had told him that till 3rd Feb, 2018 the payments of around 50% of farmers were kept pending by the sugar mill. Khaira said that the financial condition of the farmers of state is already depleted due to the anti-farmers policies of the consecutive governments and the acts like this add fuel to the fire.
The Lop requested the commissioner to personally look into the matter and get the funds released so the farmers can sow their crops of next season. He said that the govt. of Punjab must check other cases of pending payments of farmers with sugar mills and direct them to release the funds to the farmers of the state.
Acting upon the letter Cane Commissioner has directed the owners of Rana Sugars to release the payments of the farmers at the earliest.
