Jalandhar(Parteek Singh): Doaba farmers announced to start agitation against Punjab government over the sugarcane prices. The farmers are demanding hike in the prices of sugarcane. Doaba Kisan Sangarsh Committee holds a meeting on Thursday in Jalandhar and later held a press conference in which the declared if government will not consider their demands they will block the Jalandhar- Phagwara National highway to protest against government for indefinite period.
Doaba Kisan Sangarsh Committee state president, Manjit Singh Rai said the season of sugarcane harvesting is here but government has not announced the prices for the procurement. He said from last five years government has not made any increase in the prices of sugarcane, Haryana government has increased the price of sugarcane this year from Rs 320 per/quintal to Rs 330 per/quintal but in Punjab the price is between 290 to 300 per/ quintal so government should increase the price as the expenses has gone higher after every year.
He said Congress government promised them to increase the price of sugarcane during assembly elections but now they are running from their promise. We have no option left than to protest against government by blocking the national highway, if there will be need we will stop trains also. Rai warns government if their demands were not fulfilled all the farmers will start agitation against government for indefinite period. He claims 10 other farmer associations are supporting them.
