Jalandhar: Coining the slogan of ‘Good Voting, Good Fortune’, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma today called upon the youngsters to work hard for spreading this message to further cement the ethos of democracy in India on one hand and to make India a frontrunner country on the other.
Addressing the gathering during a district level function to mark, the National Voter’s Day here at HMV College, the Deputy Commissioner said that maximum participation of voters in democratic process was the key for formation of a good government. Thus, he said that thrust must be laid on sensitizing the people about the need for exercising their franchise by rising above the parochial considerations of caste, color, creed or sex adding that vote must be cast without any sort of influence.
Sharma said that this was a mammoth task and youth must contribute enormously in this national service. The Deputy Commissioner said that foolproof voter lists were the very basis of democratic process and were infact criteria for assessing the performance of a democratic nation. He said that Election Commission of India (ECI) has successfully played the role of formulating and revising the electoral rolls time and again, without any obstacle. Sharma said that due to successful democracy all the citizens enjoy a worldwide repute of being a votary for democratic values and system.
Throwing light on the importance of National Voters Day, the Deputy Commissioner informed the students that the ECI was set up on this historic day and since 2011 this day has been regularly celebrated across the country in the present form. He said that it has assured more and more participation of youth in democratic process adding that it was a red letter day in Indian polity. Sharma said that ECI was actually acting as a custodian of the democratic rights of every citizen of the country. On the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner also felicitated the officers, students and other people for contributing immensely towards voter awareness. Earlier, the Principal of college Dr. Ajay Sareen welcomed all the dignitaries to the college campus. On the occasion the students of college also presented a skit highlighting importance of vote besides other cultural items.
