Chandigarh, January 17: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has condoled the death of veteran Akali leader, eminent Sikh scholar and former chief secretary of SGPC Manjit Singh Calcutta, who passed away in Amritsar this morning after a brief illness.
In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said that Manjit Singh Calcutta, who had also held the position of Higher Education Minister, was a staunch believer in value-based politics. He worked relentlessly for the propagation of the tenets of Sikhism, recalled Captain Amarinder.
Sharing his heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family, Captain Amarinder prayed to the Almighty to give them strength to bear this huge loss and grant eternal peace to the departed soul.
Meanwhile, Captain Amarinder announced that Manjit Singh Calcutta would be accorded a state funeral at Amritsar. As a mark of respect to the departed soul, the State government also declared a half-day closure of all its offices and educational institutes, on Wednesday afternoon.
