Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, on Monday, welcomed the conviction of Sajjan Kumar in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. Terming the verdict a case of justice ‘delivered’ to the ‘worst communal violence in independent India’, Singh criticised Badals for ‘dragging’ the names of Gandhi family into the case.
“Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has welcomed the conviction of Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 riots case, terming it a case of justice finally delivered to the victims of one of the worst instances of communal violence in independent India,” said Punjab Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
“CM, however, reiterated his stand that neither the Congress party nor the Gandhi family had any role to play in the rioting & lashed out at the Badals for continuing to drag their names into the case at the behest of their political masters,” the statement read. The Delhi High Court, on Monday, convicted Sajjan Kumar for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Earlier, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that Sajjan Kumar was the face of the 1984-riots. Calling the decision a ‘positive development’, Jaitley hoped that the courts will play a decisive role in deciding the outcome of other cases. While delivering the verdict, the Delhi High Court observed that “it was an extraordinary case where it was going to be impossible to proceed against Sajjan Kumar in the normal scheme of things as there appeared to be ongoing large-scale efforts to suppress cases against him by not even recording them.”
