Chandigarh: A special CBI court here sentenced Jagtar Singh Tara for life till death in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh in 1995 outside Punjab Secretariat building, Chandigarh. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 35000.
Tara was convicted in the case yesterday during the last hearing of the case at Burail jail.
“If by killing a cruel person I can save thousands of innocent people then it is not wrong,” Tara said through his counsel, Simranjit Singh amidst chants of pro-Khalistan slogans by the supporters.
Earlier in January, Tara had submitted a letter of confession to the court stating, “I have no regret for killing Beant Singh”.
He had told the court that Beant Singh was responsible for the killings of thousands of innocent Sikh youths, and hence they were left with no option but to avenge the deaths.
Notably, Punjab Police constable Dilawar Singh was used as the human bomb in the blast that killed Beant Singh and 16 others. Total 15 people were named as accused in the case.
