Chandigarh, September 3: The Punjab Cabinet Minister Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi today flayed the Centre over the exclusion of Punjabi from the Jammu and Kashmir Official Languages Bill by terming it as another attack on the federal structure of the country.
The Cabinet Minister reacted strongly at the move as”anti-minority” and said that the BJP led Modi Government and Akali Dal who is part of the NDA Government is equally responsible for this move against the regional languages. Mr. Channi strongly reacting on the issue said that the Union cabinet approved a bill, under which Kashmiri, Dogriand Hindi, apart from the existing Urdu and English, will be the official languages in the Union territory. He said that Punjabi was a part and parcel of the constitution of Jammu and Kashmir before the abrogation of Article 370 provisions and a recognised language duly certified by the Constitution ofJammu and Kashmir.
The Minister said that Punjabi was popular among the large population of Jammu and Kashmir, this move had badly hurt the sentiments of thelakhs of Punjabi speaking people of Jammu and Kashmir. By excluding the Punjabi language, the Government of India has taken an extreme step which has caused resentment among the minorities not only in Jammu and Kashmir, but amongst all Punjabi speaking population of the country. He said that Punjabi is not only one of the main languages in Punjab but also in all adjoining states Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Rajastan, Himachal Pardesh and Delhi.
The Minister further said that even the countries like Canada and UK have given due recognition to Punjabi language at international level but in its own origin country, the BJP led NDA government has done this shameful act. The Minister lambasted the Shiromani Akali Dal and said that the Badal family has become just a puppet in the hands of BJP just to save the Ministry of Harsimrat Badal. He held Akali Dal equally responsible for all such steps which were being taken by the BJP to suppress the minorities of the country. Mr. Channi said that the Union government has to face the consequences of dictatorial steps against the minorities and especially the regional languages.He said that the protests have already begun and people are on the roads against such autocratic decisions. The Minister has appealed to review this “discriminatory move” against the minority community and demanded that an amendment should be made in the bill to include Punjabi.
