Jalandhar: In order to ensure 100% foolproof registration of the voters, the Election Commission of India has now decided to compile a complete database of the perspective voters between the age group of 17-18 years.
Divulging the details, Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma today said that in its fresh directions regarding the Special Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls 2018, the Commission has directed the BLOs to register all the perspective voters in a family. He said that this decision has been taken for compiling a database to ensure that no eligible voter was left from registration. Sharma said that as per this complete information of a perspective voter who would be eligible to become a voter in year 2019 would also be collected.
The Deputy Commissioner said that apart from information of perspective voters the details of overseas citizens would also be collected. He asked the BLOs to conduct a door to door survey in this regard. Similarly, Sharma also directed the officers to also suggest the site for alternative polling stations within their jurisdiction, so that if need arises the polling stations could be shifted to that place. The Deputy Commissioner said that it should be ensured that the places suggested as alternative polling stations was in accordance to the stipulated norms of the commission.
Exhorting the officers to perform their duty diligently, the Deputy Commissioner described the good voter lists as basis of transparent and fair elections. He said that the new innovations of the Election Commission have been instrumental in strengthening democracy at grass root level. Sharma said that these incremental changes were necessary for streamlining election process.
Earlier, Sub Divisional Magistrate Navneet Kaur Bal imparted training to the Election Registration Officers of Jalandhar and Kapurthala districts. She apprised the officers about the usage of BLO app by the Election commission to ensure foolproof registration of voters.
