Jalandhar(Parteek Singh): After summoned by a Fazilka court in a drug case Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira is under continuous attack of SAD-BJP and Congress. Pressure is mounting on Khaira to give resignation from the post of Leader of Opposition, all the leaders of rival parties have demanded Khaira to resign from the post on moral grounds.
Aam Admi Party has also not come in support of Khaira openly as there are different opinions of AAP leaders about the situation. Only from the prominent leaders of AAP Bhagwant Mann has issued a statement in support of Khaira, but he is also making distance to make any comment. The national convener of the party Arvind Kejriwal yet to declare his stand on the issue. A day back senior Akali Dal leader and rival of Khaira in Bholath, Bibi Jagir Kaur has also asked Kejriwal to take action against Khaira as his party has always stated to fight against drugs. She Said how can they let someone lead the opposition who is involved in a drug case and Khaira should resign on moral grounds as he has always asked others to do so.
The refusal of Khaira to take a moral stand on the issue of resigning from his post till he is not proved not guilty by the court has for sure put AAP in an embarrassing situation. This has left Khaira alone as he lost support within the party. Talwandi Sabo MLA and AAP women’s wing President, Baljinder Kaur has openly demanded that Khaira should resign from the post, if cleared of the charges, he should be reinstated. Baljinder Kaur is one of the front-runners for the post of LoP. AAP leader Himmat Singh Shergill said “if he was in Khaira’s position he would have immediately resigned from the post. On the other hand, Sukhpal Khaira is not looking in the mood to resign from the post, but he is extreme pressure by SAD-BJP and Congress to give resignation. Khaira’s name had come up in a heroin smuggling case after the arrest of some drugs smugglers by Fazilka police in 2015.
