Lucknow: An assistant sales manager for Apple was allegedly shot dead by an Uttar Pradesh policeman on patrol duty late on Friday night in Lucknow. The constable has claimed it a self defence.
Vivek Tewari, 38, was in his car with his ex-colleague Sana Khan when the incident took place after he rammed a police patrol motorcycle.
Constable Prashant Kumar who fired at the car, and his colleague Sandeep Kumar, were arrested after police registered an FIR on Sana’s complaint.
“The constable (Prashant) fired in self defence believing that some criminals were inside the car as the victim tried to flee after hitting the patrol bike,” senior superintendent of police Kalanidhi Naithani said.
Director general of police OP Singh said the initial probe suggests Prashant acted wrongly. “Initial findings suggest that the constable acted beyond the limit of self defence,” said Singh, adding that the case of murder has been filed and a fair investigation will be done.
The incident took place around 1:30 am in Lucknow’s upscale Gomtinagar extension area. Tiwari was injured on the neck after the constable fired at the car’s windshield.
The vehicle then rammed the pillar of a bridge. Tewari is survived by his wife and two daughters.
