Chandigarh: The farmers commenced a 10-day agitation to demand better prices for agricultural produce on Friday. Milk and vegetables were dumped on the streets by farmers in protest.
Although the strike was initially declared in Madhya Pradesh to coincide with the first death anniversary of six farmers killed in police firing at Mandsaur last June, it soon spread to Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala.
Farmers of Doaba riding on tractors gathered outside Jalandhar DC office complex and raised slogan against the government, milk and vegetables supply was also stalled in the area by farmers. Jasvir Singh, who is leading the farmers reached the DC office on board the tractors, said that the government is failing on every stand, they are not fulfilling the promises they made, because of this farmers are angry. Farmers of Shahkot, Malsian, Kartarpur, Nakodar and surrounding villages participated in the dharna. First, they reached Maksudan Mandi. After that, they marched rally to the DC office.
The farmers in Punjab’s Faridkot dumping their produce to demand loan waivers and speedy implementation of the Swaminathan commission report. Farmers were also seen pouring milk on the roads at Ludhiana’s Samrala.
