Chandigarh, August 30-Expressing shock over the reported incident, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has demanded firm action against those involved in the abduction, and forcible conversion to Islam, of a Sikh girl in Pakistan.
The Chief Minister has sought the immediate intervention of both, the Pakistan Government and the Indian Government in the matter. He has called upon Pak Prime Minister Imran Khan to take stern action against the culprits and has also urged Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar to take up the issue with his counterpart in Islamabad immediately.
Responding to reports of the incident, Captain Amarinder expressed anger and said those responsible for the crime should not be allowed to get away. Religion was a personal matter and forcible conversion of this kind had no place in any society, he asserted.
He earlier tweeted: “Shocking incident of a Sikh girl being kidnapped & forced to convert to Islam in Nankana Sahib, Pakistan. Call upon @ImranKhanPTI to take firm and immediate action against the perpetrators. Request @DrSJaishankar to strongly take up the issue with his counterpart at the earliest.”
The Chief Minister’s statement was in response to media reports stating that a Sikh girl was abducted and forcefully converted in Pakistan’s Nankana Sahib city. The girl’s family had alleged that she was kidnapped and forced to marry a Muslim boy after being forcefully converted to Islam. A video of the girl’s wedding ceremony had gone viral on the social media, prompting the Chief Minister’s swift and strong reaction.
