Chandigarh, March 11 (Wishavwarta)- Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal today while congratulating Punjab boxer Simranjit Kaur for becoming the first woman boxer to qualify for the Olympics from the State, said the SAD would felicitate her and give her a cash award of Rs one lakh.
In a statement here, the SAD President said Simranjit has done Punjab proud by qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics. “It is she to her pioneering effort that women boxing has come into the limelight in Punjab and I am hopeful more girls will take up this sport now”, he added.
Mr Sukhbir Badal also lauded the grit of Simranjit who had battled lack of facilities and risen from her native village Chakar in Ludhiana to arrive at the world stage. He said Simranjit has even overridden personal tragedy in doing so with her father passing away in July last year. “Simranjit has earlier also won laurels for the State in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing championship and I am sure she will shine in the Tokyo Olympics also”, he added.
