Chandigarh: Panjab University (PU) authorities have issued a notice banning the sale of junk food on its campus, following an advisory issued by UGC.
Dean, Student Welfare, PU issued the notice in this regards.
According to the notice, with effect from Monday, October 1 all the items classified as junk food have to be taken off the shelf from Hostels, Department Canteens and shops at Student Centre. The classified items include chips, waffers, soft drinks with artificial sweetners, hot dog, pizza, french fries and even white bread.
An advisory was issued by UGC in 2016 aiming to set new standards for healthy food and make the students live better and learn better and also reduce the obesity levels in young learners to prevent lifestyle diseases, which have a direct link with excessive weight.
Recently, reminders were sent to universities and colleges this year in August after non-compliance of the advisory.
PUCSC office bearers have opposed the ban stating that being an advisory it could be discussed with students and that students are mature enough to decide what to eat and what to wear.
